June Business

The Raleigh Bottle Club was officially formed during the June 17, 2000 kickoff meeting. There were 18 people present, most of who paid the $10 dues. Everyone enjoyed the Lumberton Bottle show on June 2-3. Also talked about the upcoming Winston-Salem show on July 29 - details on this show are at the bottom of this newsletter.

Elected club officers are:

Discussed how often to meet - agreed to meet monthly on the first Tue of each month (though the next meeting is on a Monday - sorry). Would probably skip the summer months when noone is digging.

Everyone was excited about organizing a Raleigh Bottle Show. Tentative date is Saturday April 21, 2001. Linda Lynch agreed to check into what it will cost to rent the Graham or Holshouser Building at the State Fairgrounds. This was the location of the last show (about 20 years ago). General plans are to charge for admission ($2) and early buying ($25). Plan to sell 100 8 foot dealer tables at $25 each. Would be a one day show with dealer setup and early buying 6-9am, then open to public 9am-3pm. Still need someone to step forward as Show Chairman.

We agreed to have a presentation at each meeting. Jack Murdock volunteered to go first at the August meeting with items from his personal collection. Jack Freeman agreed to present "Wilson Bottles" at the subsequent meeting. Looking for people to sign-up to present at future meetings.

Meeting finished with Show & Tell and a swap meet. Lots of nice bottles were shown and offerred for sale/trade. Pem Woodlief showed a unique fruit jar with ribbed sides in ice blue color with a leaded Hemingray lid.

Next Meeting

The next club meeting is Monday August 7, 2000 7-9pm at the Laurel Hills Recreation Center in Raleigh. The center is located at 3808 Edwards Mill Rd; their phone number is (919) 420-2383.
Directions from the 440 Beltline: take Crabtree Valley Mall exit and head west on Hwy 70 / Glenwood Ave. Will pass mall on your left - at end of mall past the Sears, turn left onto Edwards Mill Road (turning right would put you on Creedmoor Rd). The Laurel Hills Recreation Center is about 1 mile on the left (#3808).
Directions from I-40: take Wade Ave exit and head east on Wade Ave towards the State Fairgrounds. Take Blue Ridge Road exit and turn left on Blue Ridge (turning right would take you to the fairgrounds). Go past Rex Hospital then turn right onto Edwards Mill Rd (at Olde Raleigh Shopping Center). The Laurel Hills Recreation Center is about 1 mile on the right (#3808).

The Agenda for the August meeting will be:

  1. Review club business:
    1. Update membership list - add any new members
    2. Treasurer report - reminder to pay dues.
    3. Discuss format and distribution of the newsletter. Save money/time when we Email instead of mail. Currently Email to 44 people, of which 10 are members. Currently mail to 45 people, of which 6 are members.
    4. Ask people to volunteer articles for upcoming newsletters.
    5. Discuss location of next meeting. The Ramada was very nice but pricey. The Laurel Hills room is $40 for a 2 hour meeting. Anyone know of a church or somewhere we could meet cheaply? Please try to research before the Aug 7 meeting so we can vote on a place.
    6. Show report - Linda Lynch to report on cost of renting Graham or Holshouser building at the State Fairgrounds. An alternate location should also be considered if parking will be an issue at the fairgrounds. We need a Show Chairman!
    7. Meeting presenters - sign-up people to do presentations of their collections at future meetings. Jack Freeman agreed to present "Wilson Bottles" at the next meeting.
    8. Discuss having an open or silent auction at the next meeting.
    9. Open discussion, announcements, digging stories, ...

  2. Presentation by Jack Murdock (sure to see some nice Raleigh bottles).

  3. Auction and Swap Meet - an unlisted Raleigh Pepsi=Cola bottle will be offerred for auction, with proceeds going to the club treasury. This bottle is similar to the 1908 RA2 bottle in Ayer's Pepsi book.
The meeting will end with a swap meet, where each person is encouraged to bring bottles for sale/trade. Please limit yourself to a 2 box maximum. A table will be provided where bottles can be displayed for show or sale.
