We welcome articles, stories, finds, and pictures for upcoming issues of the newsletter. All past newsletters are stored on the club web page for quick and easy reference, so there is no need to print them (save a tree instead).

The Southeast Bottle Club is a non-profit organization serving the Southeastern United States. All meetings and events are open to the public, so drop by and check us out. We hope you'll consider joining the club. Club members receive the monthly newsletter via Email or postal mail, run free ads in this newsletter, and participate in all the fun and benefits the club has to offer. Free Email-only membership is also available - just request it. This newsletter is currently distributed to over 3,600 bottle collectors. Information within this newsletter may be reprinted as long as credit is given to the source.

Book Corner - Deco Soda Bottles Book

This month the book corner features Deco Soda Bottles - A Guide to Collecting Those Fancy Embossed Soda Bottles of the 1920's and 30's by Brian Wade. Published in 2003, this 103 page book provides an alphabetical listing with descriptions of over 400 of the best and most frequently found deco-era specialty soda bottles, with over 250 bottles photographed. Includes price estimates, a brief history of the evolution of these soda bottles and a bibliography. This is the only volume devoted solely to these fascinating soda bottles. Can be purchased on eBay, or directly from the author for $21.95 (price includes shipping in USA). Brian Wade, 39 East 16 Street, Huntington Station, New York 11746. Email: brian.wade@att.net

Planned Events for Southeast Bottle Club

We recently changed web host providers to prevent this problem that many people may have seen while trying to view the newsletter: "bandwidth limit exceeded". A newsletter with this many pictures takes a lot of bandwidth over the internet and we had simply outgrown our previous web host provider. Things are working smoothly with our new provider so these problems should be behind us.

The Southeast Bottle Club sponsors an annual show and several other events each year. Here's the list of upcoming events:

  1. Saturday Sep 25, 2004 9am-3pm: Raleigh Fall Bottle Festival outdoors on the lawn at the NC State Fairgrounds. Same weekend as the Southern Ideal Home Show and Liberty Antique Festival. Full details at: www.antiquebottles.com/raleighfestival

  2. Sunday Nov 21, 2004 9am-3pm: the 3rd Annual Greensboro Bottle, Insulator & Collectibles Show & Sale has been scheduled again in Greensboro NC. The later date in November avoids previous conflicts with the Pittsburg PA and Elkton MD shows. Full details at www.antiquebottles.com/greensboro

  3. Saturday April 9, 2005 8:00am-3:00pm: Raleigh Spring Bottle Festival outdoors on the lawn at the NC State Fairgrounds. Full details at: www.antiquebottles.com/raleighfestival/

The club maintains a web page directory where we publish a list of antique shops that help us promote our bottle events by allowing us to place flyers in their shops. This page is located at: www.antiquebottles.com/shops.html
Contact us if your are willing to distribute bottle event flyers in exchange for a free listing on this web page directory.

Membership Status for Southeast Bottle Club

The Southeast Bottle Club does not require membership to receive its newsletter by Email or to attend any of its events. The newsletter is distributed free by Email to encourage more bottle collectors to participate in the events sponsored by the club and the other clubs in the Southeast region. But paid membership is encouraged to help support the many activites sponsored by the club. So why not consider joining today? Click here for the online membership application, or for a printed copy just fill out the application on the inside of the back page of each newsletter. Remember that paid members can run free ads in this newsletter, and when you consider the newsletter is distributed to over 3,600 collectors, that's pretty cheap advertising for your bottle dollars.

Thanks to these new members who recently paid dues to join the Southeast Bottle Club: Don Diamond - Blackville SC, Ronald Keahey - Atoka TN, W.H. McArthur - Forest City NC, Archie Huffstetler - Mt Holly NC, and Bruce Mobley - Macon MO.

and thanks to these collectors who recently renewed their membership: Malon and Donna Rogers - Mebane NC, Anita Cullom - Roanoke Rapids NC, Mike Newman - Augusta GA, and Ken Nease - Claxton GA.

Show Report

This section provides reports on any recent shows, auctions, or other events where bottles were sold. If you are going to a bottle show that Reggie plans to attend, please bring your show & tell bottles so he can photograph them and publish in this newsletter. If you attend a show in the Southeast and want your pictures/story shown here, then just submit your info and we'll publish them.

Lumberton NC June 4-5, 2004

The Robeson Antique Bottle Club held their annual bottle show Fri/Sat June 4/5 at the The Expo and Farmer's Market in Lumberton, NC. Another fine show by the club, but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate Friday with severe thunderstorms throughout the day. The dealer dinner Friday night was scrumptuous as Paul Valenti provided home cooked chicken and rice plus sausage and rice, and Vernon Capps providing homemade pickles (best I've tasted). The weather was better on Saturday, as many fine bottles were bought and sold.

Below are some pictures from the show. To see all the pictures taken, click here.

Burlington NC Swap Meet July 31, 2004

The Southeast Bottle held it's annual swap meet on Saturday July 31 at Granddaddy's Antique Mall in Burlington, NC. Thanks to Tom Kleeburg of Granddaddy's for allowing us to have the swap meet in his mall, which is a great location for this type of event.

The meeting started with some business discussion of the Southeast Bottle Club, and then into the feature presentation on whiskey bottles by David Jackson. Meeting concluded with a raffle drawing which included a cobalt blue pontil BOARDMAN soda and three nice NC bottles. About 6 collectors brought in bottles for sale that were setup on the tables provided. And many nice bottles and jugs were brought in for show & tell.

Below are some pictures from the swap meet. To see all the pictures taken, click here.

Featured Collector: Donnie Medlin

Reggie visited Donnie Medlin's house in July and was awed by his impressive display of Pepsi bottles and go-with advertising. Donnie probably has the best antique Pepsi bottle collection in the country. It was overwhelming to try and take it all in, but I had fun trying and Donnie enjoyed showing it.

If anyone has ANY old Pepsi or any other bottles that the Pepsi company made, please feel free to contact Donnie by phone at home (919) 496-1367 or by cell (919) 497-7890, or Email donniepepsinut@msn.com

In a future newsletter we'll feature Donnie's NC whiskey bottle collection.
