This bottle is a prime example of a class of medicines that were found to cause numerous deaths among infants of their day. The active ingredients in this bottle were morphine and alcohol. The "Soothing Syrup" was administered to infants who sufferred from teething pain. It was a big seller because it was effective at calming the infant, usually by putting them to sleep. The medicine continued to be used until outlawed by the drug laws in 1906.
