Dr Jayne's Victorian Trade Cards
The Dr Jayne's cards are one of the most beautiful series of Victorian trade cards.
I'm trying to complete this series of cards (#5 is the first,
#22 is the last, and some are unnumbered.
They were put out one a year for 22 years.

- Dr. Jayne's / Two Kids w/ large open book
Color front shows two kids opening large book that begins "Books
will sometimes rouse me beyond my nature ...".
Back has advertising text for Dr Jayne's expectorant.
Card is not numbered like other Jayne's, but their is handwritten
a number "15" on the front and "70" on the back.
Excellent condition except for the writing.
Not seen this Dr Jayne's card before.
- Dr. Jayne's Expectorant / The Family Pet
Color front shows Victorian dressed girls talking around a table.
Back has advertising text about how "Pretty Polly's bright talk
has made her a favorite "Family Pet". No number in a series.
Condition is very good although there are light creases near three corners.
- Dr. Jayne's Expectorant / Girl feeding Chickens
Front of card is B&W picture of your girl feeding chickens.
Back has advertising text.
Crease on left margin and some rear staining (does not obstruct text).
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge / Paul and Virginia shaded by banana leaf
Color litho with silver background shows Paul and Virginia shaded by a large
banana leaf (from St Pierre's popular story). Back has advertising text.
Fine condition with slight corner bend.
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge / 3 Christian Graces
3" X 4 1/2"; trade card advertising Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge.
Card depicts the Christian Graces - Faith, Hope, and Charity.
Extensive text on back. Both sides of card are shown in image;
minor foxing in one corner on back and slight crease by right border
else VG condition.

Color litho with silver background shows lady in flowing robe with long brown hair.
She is smelling a morning glory flower.
Back has advertising text. Card in fine condition.
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Expectorant / Lady in gown smelling morning glory flower
Duplicate of card above.
Fair condition with some light creasing, border missing in bottom
left corner, and glue spot indention. A hard to find Jayne's card.

Front shows color litho of the "Finding of Moses by the Water".
Front of card in very fine condition. Back has glue stains but
is readable. Circa 1878-79.
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge / #6 Girl with Basket on Head
Front shows color litho of girl with a basket on her head.
Back has full advertising textfor Dr Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge.
The girl is wearing the basket to make fun of "The Latest Fashion".
Some wear and fading - most noticeable on back - but no rips/tears.
Back has some writing along the blank borders and a Philly dealer stamp.

Labeled as 7th in a series, this card is entitled "O NANNIE WILT THOU GANG WI' ME?"
(literally "Popping the Question"). Front is Scotish picture painted by Faed.
Back has advertising for Dr. Jayne's Expectorant and Dr. Jayne's Sanative Pills (a
liver pill). Stamped "SIMON RAU & CO, Bethlehem, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania".
Very good condition with yellowing and some stain on back side.

Same card as above but this one in fair condition with some overall wear
and some text missing on back. SOLD.

Similar card
Color front shows baby crawling and looking at up at dog; at cat looks on
in the background. Back has advertising text. Fine condition with light corner crease.
- Dr. Jayne's Medicines / #9 Little Red-Riding-Hood

Back
Front shows beautiful color litho of girl in red hooded coat standing in snow
in front of opened door and is entitled "Little Red-Riding-Hood".
Back has product advertising and dealer stamp for E.B. Covert in Syracuse.
Card is in near mint condition with mild yellowing on reverse side and some
very faint glue marks that do detract.

"According to a prevalent European legend, Wells, when in the mood,
would answer lovers' questions."
In this picture the maiden thinks the well answered her,
but it was really her lover!
Card goes on to give all the things that Dr. Jaynes Tonic Vermifuge,
Dr. Jaynes Sanative Pills and Dr. Jaynes Expectorant can cure.
Card is in excellent condition with two spots of paper removal of back
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge / #11 Morning Prayer
2-sided Victorian tradecard advertising Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge
and Dr. Jayne's Carminative Balsam. The reverse side has blue bold advertising
text for both products. Measures 4 5/8 by 3 1/8 inches.
- Dr. Jayne's Remedies / #12 Naughty Pussy
Back reads "Naughty Puss! the title of the present picture (twelfth of our series),
has evidently caused the pretty little child to drad too much familiarity with
Pussy hereafter.". Then goes on with advertising for product.
Excellent condition Victorian tradecard advertising Dr. Jayne's Remedies
including Dr. Jayne's Expectorant and Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge.
This nice card measures 4 1/2 by 3 1/8 inches. No creases, tears, or stains.
The reverse side is also in excellent condition with bold blue advertising text.
- Dr. Jayne's Remedies / #13 Summer at the Seaside
Beautiful chromolithography on the front and great textual advertising on the back
are both featured in this excellent condition 4 5/8 by 3 1/8 inches Victorian
tradecard advertising Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge (for worms in children!) and
Dr. Jayne's Carminative Balsam ("for Cramps,Colics,Bowel Complaints,Cholera, Morbus,
Diarrhoea,and Dysentery" for children and adults. No creases, or tears and
the text on the back is well-preserved except for one rub spot.
Back is printed in blue ink. The dealer is also
printed (not stamped) and is for a Chewsville Maryland store.
This is the 13th in the album series. Part of text on back reads "Summer at the
Seaside represents an anxious Italian mother, seated with her convalescing child
on the beach, inhaling the balmy, health-reviving air of the Sea.

Front shows beautiful color litho of lady with two Jersey cows and is
entitled "The Jerseys".
Back has product advertising and dealer stamp for David Jameson in Philadelphia.
Card is in near mint condition with mild yellowing on reverse side.

Front shows beautiful color litho of family sitting at table reading the
Bible and is entitled "Words of Comfort".
Back has product advertising and dealer stamp for Thos. Mosher in Michigan.

Condition is excellent with crease in top left corner and dog ear fold
in bottom left corner. Back text is clearly readable.

Dr. Jaynes trade card with a beautiful young lady reading a ghost story.
On the reverse is an ad for Dr. Jaynes medicines that would cure
anything from Pleurisy to
Whooping-Cough and everything in between.
The edges have slight wear. Minor stains are on the back

Front shows beautiful color litho of "Rebekah at the Well - the Approach of
the Servant" which is a popular bible story scene.
Back has product advertising and dealer stamp for Malcolm Murray in Philadelphia.
Card is in mint condition.

Front shows color litho of old gypsy lady telling fortune of young
girl while her brother looks on. #18 in the series.
Very good condition with creases in top right corner and dog ear in
bottom right corner. Back is stained but completely readable.

Same as above. This card in fair condition with borders trimmed, piece missing
from side, and some text removal on back. For Sale $3.

Same as above. This card in good condition with creases and removal of top left

Front shows color litho of girl in pink dress holding her dog by the leash.
Back has advertising text. Good condition with some creases and borders have
been trimmed. Back is yellowed and has some writing.
- Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge / #20 My Mamma!
Front shows color litho mother knitting while little girl gives her
a hug from behind. There is also a cat rubbing against the mom.
Back has advertising text. Very good condition with only problem
being the absence of the top left corner. SOLD.
- Dr. Jayne's Medicines / #21 Beggar Children
This card is the 21st in their series, titled �The Beggar Children�,
with a superb lithograph in colors of red, pink, blue, green, purple,
yellow, brown, gray, olive, black, flesh, white.
Shows two young impoverished children begging for a few scraps of food.
Back of card touts the praises of Dr. Jayne�s products, and includes an
overstamp by the card�s presenter: �I.H. HAMILTON / ANTELOPE VALLEY / ARIZONA�.
Card is in excellent condition, light staining on back, and is a larger than
usual size, measuring 3 3/4� by 4 7/8�. Dealer stamp for M.T. Thomas, Drakestown, NJ.
- Dr. Jayne's Medicines / #21 Beggar Children
Same card as above in excellent condition. Dealer stamp for JH Hamilton, Antelope
Valley, AZ. For Sale $12.
- Dr. D. Jayne & Son / #22 Comin' Thro' the Rye
Color front shows Scottish couple with man in kilt and partly reads "If a body meet a
body Comin' thro' the rye;". Back has advertising text. Very good condition with
corner crease.
- Dr. Jayne's Family Medicines / Drafting of the Declaration of Independence
Dr. D. Jayne's Family Medicines card with gorgeous litho of
"The Drafting of the Declaration of Independence."
In good condition as reflected in scan, although colors are actually brighter in real life.
There is a bend in the upper right hand corner which doesn't affect the picture.
Lower right hand corner reads "Painting only copyrighted by Wolf & Co. 1909".
Lower right hand appears to be signature of painter - "HG(?) Ferris".
Back includes information about the scene and advert. for Dr. D. Jayne's Family Medicines.
